Overview
Solar (PV) testing verifies that photovoltaic modules survive years of outdoor exposure — the temperature swings, humidity, freezing and mechanical loading a panel meets across decades in the field — without losing performance or safety. It is what stands behind a module's design-qualification and type-approval.
Because a PV module is expected to last 25 years or more outdoors, testing accelerates that exposure in the laboratory: chambers reproduce climatic cycles many times faster than real weather so that durability can be demonstrated before a module is certified and sold.
What Solar Testing Covers
PV qualification combines climatic and mechanical stresses applied in sequence:
- Thermal cycling — repeated heating and cooling to expose weaknesses in solder joints, interconnections and lamination.
- Damp heat and humidity-freeze — sustained heat and humidity, and humidity followed by freezing, to test the module's resistance to moisture ingress and delamination.
- Mechanical load — uniform pressure simulating wind and snow loads on the module surface.
