PV Module Hail (Ice Ball) Impact Test System (IEC 61215-2, MQT 17).

IEC 61215
Industries Served

Fires standard ice balls at a photovoltaic module to verify hail resistance to IEC 61215-2 (MQT 17).

Standard / methodIEC 61215-2 (MQT 17) hail test
Ball diameter25 mm standard (35–75 mm optional)
Impact speed23.0 m/s for 25 mm (±5%)
Impact points11 defined points
LauncherPneumatic, normal incidence

The PV Module Hail Impact Test System performs the hail test of IEC 61215-2 (MQT 17). Moulded ice balls are fired at the module at the speed the standard sets for each ball diameter — 23.0 m/s for the standard 25 mm ball, with larger diameters and higher speeds for more severe climates — striking eleven defined points across cells, edges, corners and mounting areas.

A pneumatic launcher delivers each shot normal to the module surface, and an ice-ball production and cold-storage chain casts and conditions the balls to the required size and temperature. After the impacts the module passes if the glass does not break, there is no major visual defect, power loss stays within the standard limit and the wet-leakage check passes.

ULMEKA designs and manufactures this system. The ball-diameter range, launcher and fixturing are built to the module and the applicable standard; the exact configuration is defined during the quotation stage.
