About this category.

Overview

Solar (PV) testing verifies that photovoltaic modules survive years of outdoor exposure — the temperature swings, humidity, freezing and mechanical loading a panel meets across decades in the field — without losing performance or safety. It is what stands behind a module's design-qualification and type-approval.

Because a PV module is expected to last 25 years or more outdoors, testing accelerates that exposure in the laboratory: chambers reproduce climatic cycles many times faster than real weather so that durability can be demonstrated before a module is certified and sold.

What Solar Testing Covers

PV qualification combines climatic and mechanical stresses applied in sequence:

  • Thermal cycling — repeated heating and cooling to expose weaknesses in solder joints, interconnections and lamination.
  • Damp heat and humidity-freeze — sustained heat and humidity, and humidity followed by freezing, to test the module's resistance to moisture ingress and delamination.
  • Mechanical load — uniform pressure simulating wind and snow loads on the module surface.

PV modules are qualified against IEC 61215, which sets the design-qualification and type-approval sequence, supported by the IEC 60068-2 environmental-test methods for the individual climatic stresses. The equipment is configured to the cycles and conditions these standards define.

Solar testing centres on environmental chambers sized to hold full modules:

  • Climatic / conditioning chambers — programmable for thermal cycling, damp heat and humidity-freeze sequences across the required temperature and humidity ranges.
  • Mechanical-load rigs — apply controlled, uniform pressure to the module surface to the load class being verified.
