IP Probu: Test Probe A.
Test Probe A is a standardised access probe used in IEC 60529 ingress protection testing to verify that equipment enclosures prevent access to hazardous parts by parts of the human body. It represents the access scenario of the back of the hand and is one of the foundational probes referenced in the IEC 60529 first-digit (solid object protection) test programme.
Test Probe A is required equipment for IEC 60529 IP1X protection-degree verification. Its geometry and applied force are defined in IEC 61032.
Test scope
The probe is applied to all accessible openings of the equipment under test with a controlled force. The geometry — a 50 mm diameter sphere — represents the back of the hand. If the probe does not enter the enclosure or contact hazardous live parts inside, the equipment satisfies the IP1X requirement.
- Probe geometry: Rigid sphere, 50 mm diameter
- Application force: 50 N per IEC 60529 / IEC 61032 (Test Probe A, ⌀50 mm sphere, IP1X access protection).
- Test orientation: Applied to all accessible openings from all reasonable directions

Configuration
- Rigid steel sphere, machined to IEC 61032 tolerance
- Ergonomic handle for controlled-force application
- Calibration certificate provided
- Available individually or as part of a complete IEC 60529 probe set (Probe A, B, C, D, 11, 41, 43)
Use case
- IEC 60529 / ISO 20653 IP1X compliance verification
- Enclosure design review for safety-critical electrical equipment
- Production quality control — IP1X screening for enclosure parting lines, ventilation openings, cable entries
- Test laboratories accredited for IEC 60598 (luminaires), IEC 60335 (household appliances), IEC 60884 (plugs and sockets) and related product standards
Engineering notes
Test Probe A targets the lowest IP protection level (IP1X) and is generally the easiest IP test to pass — but failure indicates accessible large openings that almost certainly fail higher protection levels too. Including Test Probe A early in the design verification cycle is a quick way to confirm basic enclosure integrity before committing to more demanding probe geometries (B, C, D for finger and tool access). Calibration of the probe geometry is essential — worn or damaged probes may produce false-pass results.
Test probe A is specified in IEC 60529 for first-characteristic-numeral IP access tests.
Standard reference
Test Probe A is one of the standard access probes defined in IEC 61032, used together with IEC 60529 to verify the first characteristic numeral. It represents access by a large body part and is applied with the force specified by the standard to confirm hazardous parts cannot be reached.
