About this category.

Overview

Cable testing verifies that cables, the conduit systems that protect them and the wires inside electrical equipment perform safely and reliably — that they withstand bending, heat, electrical stress and, where required, fire without failing. It covers the cable or wire as a product and the management systems that route it.

Because cables and wiring are embedded throughout buildings, vehicles and machines and are expected to last for the life of the installation, testing confirms their durability and safety in a controlled, repeatable way before they are specified and installed.

What Cable Testing Covers

The checks span mechanical, electrical, thermal and fire behaviour:

  • Mechanical durability — bending, flexing and the resistance of conduit to compression and impact, confirming cables stay protected under installation and use.
  • Fire behaviour — flame-propagation checks confirm that a cable or conduit does not spread fire beyond a defined length once the ignition source is removed.
  • Material and insulation properties — the mechanical and thermal properties of wire insulation that must survive winding and service.

Cable-management and wire testing draws on IEC 61386 for conduit systems and IEC 60851 for the test methods of winding wires, supported by flame-propagation methods for cables. The equipment is configured to the cable, wire or conduit type and the property each standard defines.
