IPX5 and IPX6 Dust Test Chambers

IPX5 and IPX6 Dust Test Chambers are used to test the dust resistance of electrical devices, based on the IEC 60529 standard. These tests are performed to determine the level of dust resistance of a device. IP5X indicates that the device is protected against dust, while IP6X indicates that the device is completely dust-tight.

IPX5 (Protected Against Dust)

As per IEC 60529, Section 13.4, the test for IPX5 requires the use of talcum powder with a particle size of 75 microns. Additionally, the talcum powder should be replenished after every 20 tests, and the dust volume should be 2 kg per cubic meter.

IPX6 (Dust-Tight Protection)

The test for IPX6 is also detailed in IEC 60529. During this test, the device is exposed to fine dust particles, such as talcum powder, and the objective is to prevent any dust penetration.

• IEC 60529: This standard serves as the primary reference for both IP5X and IP6X dust tests. It defines all parameters of the tests used to determine the dust resistance level of devices.
• EN 60529: This European standard aligns with IEC 60529 and specifies the dust test procedures for ensuring dust protection in devices. The same test methods and procedures apply.
• UL and TSE: UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and TSE (Turkish Standards Institute) generally refer to IEC 60529 standards. These standards establish requirements for ensuring the safety and durability of devices. UL manages safety testing and certification processes in the United States, while TSE applies the standards in Turkey.

Under IEC 60529, the dust test uses fine talcum powder kept in suspension inside the chamber. The first characteristic numeral 5 (IP5X) means dust-protected — ingress is not fully prevented but cannot enter in an amount that interferes with operation; numeral 6 (IP6X) means dust-tight — no ingress of dust. The standard defines Category 1 (enclosures where vacuum is applied, for equipment whose normal duty cycle creates a pressure difference) and Category 2 (no vacuum), which determine how the test is conducted.

The chamber controls powder circulation and test duration so that IP5X and IP6X classifications can be evaluated on the same system; it can be configured alongside IPX water tests where a combined IP rating is required.
