IP Test Laboratory Installation
An IP (Ingress Protection) test chamber is a specialized test environment used to measure the resistance of devices against water, dust, and other external factors. IP codes consist of two digits that determine the protection levels of devices. The first digit indicates the protection level against dust, while the second digit indicates the protection level against water. IP tests are widely applied in industrial products, electronic devices, transportation equipment, and the automotive industry, where waterproof and dustproof requirements are essential.
IP Test Levels
IP tests consist of a series of tests that determine how resistant a device is to various external factors. The IP code consists of two digits: the first digit indicates the device’s resistance to solid objects (e.g., dust), while the second digit indicates its resistance to water. Below are the detailed explanations of the IP tests:
IPX1 Test:
IPX1 tests the resistance of a device to vertically falling water droplets. In this test, 2.5 mm diameter water droplets fall on all sides of the device for 10 minutes. It is checked whether any water enters the device. IPX1 provides a basic level of protection against water droplets.
IPX2 Test:
IPX2 tests the device’s protection against water droplets, allowing exposure at inclined angles. In this test, the device is exposed to 2.5 mm diameter water droplets at a 15° angle for 10 minutes. This test ensures the device’s resistance to light rain or water exposure at an inclined position.
IPX3 Test:
IPX3 ensures that the device is protected against water sprays at a 60° angle. The device is exposed to 3 mm diameter water jets for 5 minutes. The device must not be damaged by water or allow water to enter. IPX3 indicates resistance to rain and water splashes.
IPX4 Test:
IPX4 tests the device’s protection against water splashes from all directions. The device is exposed to 1 mm diameter water jets for 5 minutes. No water should enter, and functionality must not be affected. IPX4 confirms protection against light water splashes.
IPX5 Test:
IPX5 determines the resistance of the device to water jets. A 6.3 mm diameter water jet is applied to all sides of the device at a pressure of 12.5 L/min for at least 3 minutes. The device must prevent water ingress or show minimal effects, proving protection against water splashes and low-pressure water.
IPX6 Test:
IPX6 tests resistance to stronger water jets. The device is subjected to 12.5 mm diameter water jets at 100 L/min for 3 minutes. The device should not allow water ingress or damage internal mechanisms. IPX6 ensures resistance to more challenging water conditions.
IPX7 Test:
IPX7 tests the device’s immersion resistance. The device is submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, and no water ingress should be detected. This test proves the device’s resistance to short-term immersion.
IPX8 Test:
IPX8 tests the device’s continuous water submersion resistance. Similar to IPX7, but in this case, the device is submerged at a depth and duration specified by the manufacturer. The device must be resistant to prolonged water immersion.
IPX9K Test:
IPX9K tests the device’s resistance to high-pressure and high-temperature water jets. The device is tested with 80°C water at 14-16 L/min at 80 bar pressure from a distance of 4-6 meters. This test confirms that the device is resistant to harsh industrial environments.
